My wife understands that cars are a thing I like and she has no problem with me taking some time and/or money to indulge in my passions. She doesn’t understand cars or the entertainment people derive from them.

So it surprised the heck out of me when she suggested we go to a demolition derby on Saturday night. We had a blast, got some beers after and a good time was had by all.

Fact: Almost everyone loves carnage/mishap/injury/destruction/defeat/insert own word here in a controlled environment. How else do you explain jousting, Roman “circuses”, boxing, wrestling, martial arts in general, the best hockey games or indeed demo derby?

In the spirit of this being a good post which nonetheless doesn’t really raise any issues or topics of conversation, and instead offers closure, leaving nothing to remark on - while actually being a story! - I must offer the following:

I had no doubt she’d enjoy it once she was there. It was the getting her there that I ever thought would happen.

I hope to have more derbies in the future. There was a blue Taurus that won a heat and ended up being in the survivor rounds at the end. She couldn’t really gauge the amount of destruction done to these cars until I pointed out that it was originally the size of my previous car but now stopped slightly aft of its forcefully re-positioned rear axle.

I’d love to go to a demo derby some time. It seems like it would be good fun. Hell, even though it’s lame, I’ve enjoyed the few times I’ve went to see Monster Trucks. Aside from the noise. Why they hold them in a closed arena always confused the hell out of me.

Well it’s fair season up here in the great northern woods of America and the redneck boys have been wrenching all summer to get their cars ready enough to be violently turned to scrap.
